Taste as a reward for good care
The origins of Livar, the Limburg monastery pig, lie at Lilbosch Abbey in Echt, Limburg. Since 1999, the abbey has worked with small-scale pig farmers in Limburg to raise Livar pigs. The special crossing of breeds, feed from regionally grown cereals and the highest possible care for animal welfare, gives our Livar meat the best quality and taste. You can taste that!

The King and Queen will visit The Narrowest Bit of the Netherlands on May 19th!
Happy, proud, but above all honoured. How wonderful that His Majesty the King and Her Majesty Queen Máxima will visit the Municipality of Echt-Susteren next month!
In November already, the governor asked me to start preparations, but this had to be done in the utmost secrecy. The Royal Household was - as usual - excellently informed and had already precisely determined the topics in advance: the King and Queen wish to be updated on the Narrowest Part of the Netherlands, with particular attention to (water) safety and crime, and our cross-border culture and language, and they would then like to visit Lilbosch Abbey and the Livar farm there, where Cittaslow and the quality of life in the countryside should be discussion topics.
So the location for the second part of Their Majesties' visit was fixed, but for the first part, we were allowed to come up with a proposal ourselves. The idea of receiving the King and Queen in Illikhoven was met with enthusiasm. After all, Illikhoven is where the Narrowest Piece of the Netherlands on the Maas originates, where the danger of high water synchronises with the beauty of the new nature, and it is a wonderful example of community spirit in the countryside.
Exactly one hundred years ago – on 3 January 1926 – Queen Wilhelmina visited Echt-Susteren due to the flooding that affected our region at the time. Since then, no member of our Royal House has stopped here. But on the morning of 19 May, that will change. Let us welcome our King and Queen with all due respect. Fly the flag and come welcome them with us in Illikhoven or at Lilbosch!

Our drone captured some beautiful footage of the rapeseed near the Kloosterboerderij, which is currently in full bloom. Later this summer, the rapeseed will be harvested for the production of rapeseed oil. Perfect for baking and frying! 🍳🥩
The plant's stems are processed into litter for our Livar pigs. So our pigs are not only fed regionally grown grains, but also get to roam in local litter. How circular and local do you want it? 🐷💚
Yet another fine example of sustainable agriculture 👨🌾

Time for Livar spare ribs! ☀🔥
We cook our spare ribs using the 3-2-1 method in the @biggreenegg_nl, which results in a delicious, balanced flavour and
a tender texture. Instead of a classic barbecue sauce, we use an Asian marinade in this recipe. You'll find the end
result is surprisingly tasty and you won't be able to get enough of it. Especially when combined with the Thai
salsa 🤤
