Echt - Sint Antoniushoeve

In 2023, the two completely newly built Livar stall houses in Echt were officially put into use. These two new stalls are full of innovations. For example, the sows can farrow in freedom in the 160 farrowing rooms. In the indoor pen, the sow and piglets always have access to a straw bed. They can also choose to go outside. Sows and piglets stay together for at least six weeks. Then, the weaned piglets stay together in their group for another six weeks, before moving to a Livar finishing house.

New gadgets

With financial support from Province of Limburg and the EU, the stables have been equipped with several new gadgets. Such as automatic defrosting of both the indoor and outdoor areas and a straw bedding system. The automatic defrosting should contribute to a very fresh and pleasant barn climate and is expected to reduce emissions. The bedding system ensures that fresh straw is added to the pigs' litters several times a day.

Emission reduction

Separation of manure and urine at source, combined with separate disposal several times a day, results in expected low emissions of odour, nitrogen and CO₂. Livar applies this system with sliders in both the indoor and outdoor runs. The combination of a high animal welfare level and expected low emissions of odour, nitrogen and CO₂, makes these two houses unique. The new barns have been certified with 3 stars by the Animal Protection Society's Beter Leven quality mark.
